Chobani Greek Yogurt Recall Information
September 5, 2013 — Chobani, Inc. and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have issued an official Chobani Yogurt Recall announcement after mold was discovered in products manufactured at a facility in Twin Falls, Idaho.
The recall affects 91 types of Greek yogurt that were distributed throughout the United States at major retailers including Safeway, Costco, Walgreens, Target, and more. The containers are marked with a best-by date between September 11 and October 7. They are also marked with the code: 16-012. All flavors, sizes (2.25 oz., 3.5 oz., 5.3 oz., 6 oz., 16 oz., and 32 oz.), and fat contents (0%, 1.5%, 2%) are included in the recall.
The company has apologized to customers and issued the following statement on their website:
“I’m sorry we let you down. … This type of mold is common in the dairy environment, particularly when using only natural ingredients that are absent of artificial preservatives … Over the past few days, with the help of our retail partners, we proactively withdrew product from store shelves.”
Chobani “Withdraws” Products For Days Before Notifying FDA
The first announcement of the Chobani yogurt recall was not from the FDA — it was on the Chobani Facebook Page on August 31. For nearly a week, Chobani personally responded to hundreds of customer complaints with apologies and insistence that “we have not issued a recall” — all while declining to name the affected products or the type of mold discovered.
It was not until September that the FDA required a recall. On September 4, Chobani told Dairy Reporter that the problem was “an issue of quality, not food safety”. They said “removing and replacing” the product from store shelves was a “voluntary withdrawal” and not a recall.

Moldy Yogurt and Food Poisoning
Molds on yogurt can cause serious allergic reactions, respiratory problems, and food poisoning. Some types of mold produce “mycotoxins,” which are poisonous substances that can make people sick. Mold growth is encouraged in foods with high moisture content, such as yogurt and cheese. Yogurt can be contaminated below the surface, and it may be impossible to tell if a product is moldy just by looking at it.
